More about Big-O

Although I think my posts do reveal quite a bit about myself, I’ve been feeling that I didn’t tell the entire story when I introduced myself before. I have experimented with food as long as I have been cooking it, and that urge itself was just an extension of a drive that I’ve had my whole life: to create, and to take things apart.

I was the kid who would take apart all his toys, and then put them back together again. Usually some parts would be left over but somehow the toy still worked. This happened to everything from action figures to alarm clocks. I got my first Nintendo for Christmas of 1986, and by ‘87 (age 10) I had taken mine apart more than once, and was actually fixing Nintendo for other kids in the neighborhood. Oh, hi there…

ben from the left

I guess I should introduce myself as well…
I’m not a chef either.  Chefery to me is the art of pretending to be a chef.  Which is something I am definitely good at!  I mean seriously.  I love to cook, I make good food, but I’d never cut it as a professional in terms of cooking in the long run.

Which is fine with me. Like Big-O, I cook when I get a chance.  On the weekends, holidays, and other assorted days if I manage to get home from work early enough.  Which isn’t often.   Most of my cooking is on the stove top, grill (er, not recently though, since I don’t currently have a grill…), or deep fryer (yum!).  My wife does the baking in our house when she’s not busy with other projects.

I’m constantly battling with my desire to experiment with strange and odd flavors and my wife’s desire to feed the kids something they’ll actually eat.  I figure if my kids will eat it, it’s pretty darn tasty.  Then again, my kids are the ones that make pancake sandwiches consisting of bread, pancakes, and ketchup–so who knows.  They also make bacon sandwhiches, so there’s hope yet.

I’ll add to Big-O’s comment: if you like to play with your food while your cooking it, then you’ve found some kindred spirits.  We’ve got some cool stuff planned, so stick around.

Introducing Big-O…

Hello everyone! I’d kick things off by introducing myself. Ben, the other person that makes this site what it is, will be introducing himself in a separate post, so stay tuned. My name is Orien, but my friends often call me Big-O or simply ‘O’. You can call me ‘Chef’ (that’s a joke).

Actually I’m not a chef at all, I’m a web developer, but I like to pretend to be a chef on the weekends or whenever I get the chance. I have a deep passion for food, and I’m always learning new things. I love kitchen gadgets, new spices, recipes, and sharing my creations with other people. My favorite cooking method is over an open fire, followed closely by a gas grill, and my favorite food to cook is potatoes, followed closely by just about any kind of meat. I’m hoping that this web site can be a place where I can show off what I make, and share the things that I’m learning.

Experimental Chefery is about the passion of food, friendly competition, and a pursuit of knowledge. I’m the guy who’s always making food that people are afraid to eat, until they actually taste it. Then they want the recipe.

Expect a lot more in the days to come, but for now I’ll just sum up by saying that if you’re not afraid to try new things, or if you’re the kind of person that thinks of a recipie as more of a guideline than a rigid set of instructions, then you’re in the right place.
