Fathers Day Grilling

Well, today is Fathers day, and like a lot of other dads across the country today, I was given my choice of any meals I’d like to eat. My choices were first biscuits and gravy, followed by whatever for lunch, and ending with Steak at dinner time. These choices are not uncommon I’m sure, but unlike some fathers, I insist on cooking my steak myself! Read on for the tasty details. Read the rest of this entry »

Challenge #1:Bacon Donuts — Big-O responds

Ok, Ben clearly has come out swinging with this one. Anything related to baking (in this case the yeast dough) is NOT my wheelhouse so I’m probably at a disadvantage to start with, but I’ve cooked my fair share of bacon so I think I’ve still got a fighting chance of making something tasty. Challenge #1: Bacon Donuts–Ben Serves up some WIN!!

INTRO!

Well of course I did?  Was there any doubt that I would?  Okay, before I get to the process, I want to describe how excited I am about how GOOD these things are!  I’ll make this easy.  We made 14 donuts, and about 20 donut holes with my recipe, and they were all gone after the next morning’s breakfast.  My kids LOVED these things.  My wife even loved them.  So, that’s the sell.  I’ll describe the experience in a minute.  But first…a recipe. Challenge #1:Bacon Donuts–The Setup

The Setup:

Who doesn’t like donuts?  I mean, other than diabetics, dieters and total duds?  Really.  Donuts are awesome.  They are sweet, tasty, and come in such a variety of flavors that you can always find one that’s perfect for you.

And bacon?  Do I really need to elaborate?  The only people that don’t like bacon are those who aren’t allowed to eat bacon because of their religion, vegetarians, and the six other people that haven’t tried it yet.  Most of them like it too.  My son tells me that bacon is ‘healthy for you’, and since he’s five, I’ll take his word for it.  Mmmm….bacon.

So, we have two wonderful foods…why not combine them?  Okay, sure it might be just a bit strange.  I mean desserts with meat can easily go awry…just look at the trout ice-cream that got served up on a certain cooking show.  Ew.  Even I have my boundaries.  But this has potential.  Think of it of it as an experiment in breakfast foods.

The Plan

Since this is our first salvo, here’s how it works, we both start off with the same basic recipe, and we’ll modify it in different ways with an end goal in mind.  Ben (that’s me) has a plan for bacon donuts.  Big-O has a different plan for bacon donuts.  We’ll make our donuts, then swap recipes, and let you know what we think of the other’s recipes.  Of course, refinements are allowed.

Who wins?

I do.  Of course.  Because I get to eat yummy bacon while I cook it.  I mean come on, isn’t it obvious?  Well, of course, Big-O might think he wins, for the same reason, but don’t let him fool you!

Oh, hi there…

ben from the left

I guess I should introduce myself as well…
I’m not a chef either.  Chefery to me is the art of pretending to be a chef.  Which is something I am definitely good at!  I mean seriously.  I love to cook, I make good food, but I’d never cut it as a professional in terms of cooking in the long run.

Which is fine with me. Like Big-O, I cook when I get a chance.  On the weekends, holidays, and other assorted days if I manage to get home from work early enough.  Which isn’t often.   Most of my cooking is on the stove top, grill (er, not recently though, since I don’t currently have a grill…), or deep fryer (yum!).  My wife does the baking in our house when she’s not busy with other projects.

I’m constantly battling with my desire to experiment with strange and odd flavors and my wife’s desire to feed the kids something they’ll actually eat.  I figure if my kids will eat it, it’s pretty darn tasty.  Then again, my kids are the ones that make pancake sandwiches consisting of bread, pancakes, and ketchup–so who knows.  They also make bacon sandwhiches, so there’s hope yet.

I’ll add to Big-O’s comment: if you like to play with your food while your cooking it, then you’ve found some kindred spirits.  We’ve got some cool stuff planned, so stick around.
